i was never interested with wildlife killings until now..  i wondered how an animal feels when they are shot all of a sudden.. do they feel the pain? i guess yes.. do they think of their loved ones (if any) when they know that they are going to die? i cannot comprehend how or what they feel as they get helpless when humans harm them..

i was disheartened today this morning when my uncle shot an oblivious bird in our yard.. i heard a gun shot but i ignored as i thought that what he shot is a snake or a big rat.. then my father called my attention to show me a bird that my uncle shot.. and then i recognized the bird which (yes the bird is familiar to me) i see every night with a friend.. our house is located near a church, we only have 2 neighbors in our street and the rest is just vacant lots with bushes and creeks.. then the story goes.. my friend noticed this bird walking around near the creek when he pointed it out to me.. it is not the usual “maya” bird that we see around the city.. it is long and tall about two meters in height, it’s feathers are colored brown, has a long beak, neck and long, thin yellow legs.. we watched in awe as the bird hunts its food by the waters.. maybe it is hunting for fishes for dinner i thought.. we argued that the bird is a king fisher because of its long beak but i was never sure which specie of birds it belongs.. for months at night we see that bird walking around hunting for food on a certain area beside a creek near the church. it is always there. it seems to me that the bird is very fond of our place as it doesn’t fly away every time a vehicle passes by.. i thought “hindi siya natatakot”. maybe the vacant lots and bushes around our place has been it’s sanctuary.. we also got fond seeing the bird as if it’s already a part of our habitual “hang out”. then today i saw it already lifeless.. shot by a relative inside our very own yard.. i was in denial..as i thought could it be the same bird that i watch hunting at night? how and on what point did it got shot? where did it come from? then as i look at the lifeless creature my father told me that they saw it fly inside our yard, it went down near the waters 12 meters away from our house and then my uncle shoot it. i chose to stay silent about it than to blame and get mad.. i don’t know how or why some enjoys harming creatures that doesn’t hurt them.. guns should be used in the right manner and not by harming others.. i took a picture of the bird to show my friend if it could be the same bird that we watch and yes it is the same. and we further agreed that it is the very same bird because it didn’t show up in its usual hunting ground tonight.. until now they haven’t buried the bird’s body, they displayed and brag it to their friends who visit. i mean what is there to brag in ruthlessly killing an animal for the sake of bragging? sorry little fellow i wish i was able to stop them.. i started being curious with laws concerning animals. what i can do now is to make sure that the birds body be buried first thing in the morning…

Joy requires one to be awake,
Adjusting the heart’s ambience to bright.
Some prefer the dark, as is their right,
On grounds of agony, and to forsake
Not only bliss, but all that’s blessed by light.
